Savings and Coupons

11/03/2010

In between being with Mama at the hospital, taking care of a sick Benjamin, cleaning, cooking, taking a phone call about Matt's jammed thumb and overall exhaustion, I managed to get to three stores for quick trips today.

First, I went to Younkers. I have almost no shoes for colder weather. We lost many of them with the flooding this summer. I had a coupon for $10.00 off of a $25.00 purchase. I got a pair of black boots.

Original Price $60.00
Sale Price       $27.97
Less Coupon-$10.00

Price for boots? $17.97

I also went to JC Penney. I got a pair of brown ankle boots.

Original Price $45.00
Sale Price       $26.99
Less Coupon-$10.00

Price for shoes? $16.99

After picking Abbi up early from school, I rushed over to Walgreen's to take advantage of their deals.

Total: $20.07

I went to Cub Foods today. I am still figuring out their coupon deals. They actually have coupons in their sales papers for many products that you HAVE to use in order to get the sales price. Also, the cashiers aren't always aware of the coupons and don't remind you if you miss one, or just scan an extra one they have laying around. I still did really well. I saved nearly 50%. My total was $58.71 after savings and coupons. The original price would have been $109.50. For this amount, I got:

2 Hellman's Mayonnaise
1 Era Detergent
2 Ragu Alfredo Pasta
1 Fetuccini noodles
2 Breyer's Ice Cream
2 Popsicles brand popsicles
1 whole cut up fryer
4 Eggo Waffles
2 Grand's Biscuits
18 eggs
2 packages of fresh strawberries
1 Tyson Frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts
3 dozen Sprite Cans
1 package Sausage links
1 Cheeto's
1 lb deli turkey
2 Skippy Peanut Butter

Nearly every product had a store coupon and at least one I also had manufacturer coupons for. If it didn't have a store coupon, I DID have a manufacturer coupon. I really like it when I can combine the two, but, that doesn't always happen. All in all, a pretty good day :)

Walgreen's had good sales today, too. I got $49.15 in merchandise for $11.65. I did three separate transactions to get the savings. Most of the time, cashiers are pretty good about it because they know what people like me are doing. I try not to hog the line, though. If people are lining up behind me, I will step back and let someone else go first. Here is what I did today.

TRN 1
1 Contact Solution $4.99
                              -$3.00 in RR

I paid $1.99 and got back $4.00 in RR that I used for the second transaction.

TRN 2
2 boxes of Benadryl $8.98
                                -$1.00 coupon
                                -$4.00 in RR

I paid $3.98 and got back $5.00 in RR to use on the third transaction.

TRN 3
4 cans progresso soup 4/$5 plus two coupons for $0.50 off 2 cans
2 Lysol Cleaners BOGO $2.99 plus a coupon for $1.00 off two
2 boxes Nature Valley Granola Bars 2/$4.00 plus coupon for $0.75 off two boxes
4 packages of Mentos gum $0.99 each plus 2 coupons for $1.00 off 2

When I added the $9.00 in RR that I had, the total came down to $5.65 I didn't have any RR left over from this trip.

Grocery savings today were frustrating to me. I know I did really well, but, it doesn't feel like I did as well as I used to. However, one thing I have discovered is groceries are already priced lower here than they were in Tennessee. Meat, in particular, is priced much better, so, I am not seeing the 60% and 70% savings I used to see. However, I am still getting a LOT of groceries for what I spend. I went to the Hy-Vee today and got $115.23 in groceries for $65.26. I used nearly $20 in coupons. Almost everything I bought was on sale AND I had a coupon for it. Most of the things I got were name brand. I also got a printed coupon for $10.00 off my next purchase because of a deal I took advantage of. For the $65 I spent, I got the following items:

1 box Barilla pasta
1 can StarKist tuna
1 bag sugar
2 boxes mac & cheese
1 apple juice
1 jar apple sauce
1 Kraft bbq sauce
8 cans of vegetables
1 package of yeast
3 lbs of 85% lean ground beef
18 eggs
3 packages of cream cheese (Philly)
10 packages Ramen Noodles
10 packages Kool-Aid
1 package Hormel Lunch meat
1 large bottle Crisco canola oil
1 lb butter
1 Kraft parmesan cheese
1 lb Oscar Mayer bacon
1 Danonino yogurt 6 pack
2 12 count boxes Pop Tarts
2 boxes Nutri-Grain bars
3 boxes Frosted Flakes
2 boxes Apple Jacks
1 box Rice Krispies
1 Pillsbury Sweet Moments brownie bites
1 Pillsbury cookies

I had a TERRIFICALLY awesome sales day at Walgreen's today! I purchased $81.23 in merchandise for $19.53 out of pocket AND I have $7.00 in Register Rewards to use on my next visit! How did I do it? I will tell you! I had to do two transactions.

TRN 1

Contact Solution $7.99
Razor                  $9.89

I had a $1.00 coupon on the contact solution and a $4.00 coupon on the razor. This brought the total down to $12.88. I got back $13.00 in RR to use on my next purchase.

TRN 2

2 Boxes Strawberry Nutrigrain Bars
2 Boxes Lipton Tea Bags
2 Packages of 6 AA Batteries
1 Hellman's Mayonnaise
2 Boxes Playtex Tampons
2 Cans Bumblebee Tuna
2 Boxes Kellogg's Frosted Mini Wheats
2 Packages Pilot G2 Pens

After sale prices, coupons AND a 15% off the entire transaction coupon, the total for all of this came to $6.65 and I got back $7.00 in Register Rewards! I got PAID for this transaction! If you haven't gotten started using coupons yet, I would be happy to answer any questions!

08/02/2010

On Friday, I caught a REALLY good sale on my make-up. I use Mary Kay and one of the first things I did when we moved was find a new person to buy it from. Well, it turns out I made a good choice. The person I ran into was a director for this area. She invited me to her annual sale. I not only got clearanced items, I got a discount and a free gift for going early! Here is what I bought:

5 eyeshadow colors
2 lip colors in a compact together
2 lip liners (my exact color, they have recently changed the packaging)
1 compact (this holds powder, foundation, eye shadows, or 1 blush and 3 eyeshadows)

Total=$10.50!!!
Not bad when you think about the fact that the compact alone normally costs $18.00! It is ALWAYS worth it to get out early and be the first to a sale. Black Friday, here I come!

07/28/2010

Savings for today started at Walgreen's. I noticed they had put their binders on sale BOGO and I needed two. I ended up purchasing $25.29 in merchandise for $8.38. Here is what I got and what I did:

1 package Pecan Sandies
2 Packages Peanut Butter on Cheese crackers
2 Packages of Peanut Butter crackers

$5.00 with $2.00 in register rewards
The crackers were originally $1.79 per pack and the Sandies were $1.99

I then purchased:
1 pocket spiral notebook $0.99 with a coupon that made it $0.19
3 zipper pencil pouches $1.99 for $0.59 with coupon
2 binders $4.59 each that were on sale BOGO
-$2.00 in RR from first transaction made this one $3.38 Not bad :)

I had to go to Hy-Vee for some groceries this afternoon, too. I Purchased $61.59 in groceries for $33.08. I am including a picture so you can see what I bought today. Keep in mind that the chicken tenders, ziploc bags, and milk without sales or coupons would have cost nearly half of what I spent! The brown package is ground beef and not everything I bought today was on sale, yet with the sales I took advantage of, I still managed to save nearly 50%. I LIKE coupons!

It is school supplies time again! Some people might feel it is easier just to bite the bullet and go to one place and get it all done in one fell swoop. It doesn't have to be done that way! With a little patience and organizing (lists!) you can get stuff REALLY cheap! Here are my deals of the day:

Kmart

I purchased $13.13 worth of school supplies for $2.50.

Hand Sanitizer
4 packs of post-its
2 packs of filler paper
1 pack of sharpies
1 package of colored pencils

Everything was on sale with exception to the hand sanitizer. I had a coupon to get it free with a $5.00 purchase. I also had a $4.00 rewards from my last shopping trip!

Staples

I purchased $88.69 in merchandise for $14.49

2 12 packs of pencils
1   8 pack of pencils
1 drawing pad
2 packs of graph paper
25 packages (8 count) of Bic pens

I have to admit this purchase was partially made possible through their "Teacher Rewards Program". I was allowed to get 25 packs of the pens whereas many would only be allowed to buy two. Had it not been for the rewards program, I would have spent $14.26 on $23.72 in products. It still would have been a productive trip :)
